We were delighted to see one of our outdoor Summer rehearsals featured on the front of High Notes, Making Music's fabulous magazine.
It took a great deal of organisation to make it possible, but it was well worth the efforts of members of our committee. It was such a pleasure to be singing together under Martin Bussey's direction.
The Music Plays On
With all the problems and issues that the current pandemic throws at everyone, Cantiones continues to do what we can together. Those of us who managed to meet outdoors to sing last year benefitted so much from what has become a rare joy for all choirs.

We thoroughly enjoyed singing carols in Cae Glas Park in Oswestry on 12th December, with the co-operation and support of Oswestry Town Council. Passing shoppers were delighted to hear the Christmas music sung 'live', even though we were inevitably very rusty from a lack of being able to rehearse together in person. It didn't really matter, as simply singing as a group was a joy.
Lots of beaming faces amongst by-standers and people walking past, as we helped to raise people's spirits.
Back to Singing! - Summer 2020
The sun shone brightly as more than half the members of Oswestry's Cantiones met on Sunday (30th Sept) afternoon to sing together once again. It was a wonderfully uplifting experience after nearly six months of silence during the pandemic’s worst months. Musical Director, Martin Bussey led the 90 minute rehearsal at a very safe distance and commented that the choir made a pretty decent sound! Of course the choir has been fortunate that Martin has provided weekly rehearsal videos to practice at home for which we were all very grateful but there is nothing better than singing as a group.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed raising their voices on such a sunny day and looks forward to meeting again later this month.
Cantiones is a mixed-voice chamber choir of enthusiastic singers, based in the Shropshire Market Town of Oswestry.
The choir performs three main concerts per year, and under the baton of Musical Director Martin Bussey, work hard to maintain a high standard of performance.
The choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings in Oswestry.
We are regularly accompanied in rehearsals by our former musical director, of 17 years Gerry Howe who is also organist at St Oswalds and the well known Oswestry musician and former MD Chris Symons accompanies us in performance. The choir normally performs one or two substantive concerts a year and a popular carol concert at Christmas. The repertoire includes both sacred and secular music from the 16th to 20th century performed in up to 8 parts.
